Stress occurs only when you are aware of the event or perceive it.
It does not matter whether the motive is real or imagined for you. Your psyche does not make a difference whether it is a real or an imagined trigger. If you have perceived either a real or imagined event, you evaluate it and your reaction depends on it and how you decide to deal with it. This evaluation depends on your convictions and beliefs - you value the situation either as a danger or as an insignificant one.
From the point of view of stress, it does not matter whether it is a real dangerous situation or a perceived threat.
