“Regret is the most useless thing in the world. One can’t recall anything. And one can’t rectify anything. Otherwise we’d all be saints. Life didn’t intend to make us perfect. Whoever is perfect belongs in a museum.”
Erich Maria Remarque
“Arch of Triumph”
Regret is closely linked with a sense of guilt.
Regret is an emotion that is related to making judgments. You judge your past actions and behaviours.
Regret is a negative emotion and you feel guilty, sad, low and embarrassed about the past events, and wish all of these had never happened. At the same time, you may regret things you haven’t done, and feelings or opinions you haven’t expressed.
You want to return to these past events and change your behaviour or attitude.
You may also regret that you haven’t used your abilities and skills to the full, haven’t believed in yourself more, and have missed opportunities to be more successful or happy.
This, in turn, leads to a sense of guilt – you think you have betrayed yourself.
Do you regret anything you have or haven’t done? What exactly?
